Role purpose:
Lead Breeder Pearl Millet, position will be responsible for overall activities of Pearl Millet hybrid Development with the aim to deliver periodically new products to the market.
Responsibilities:
The Lead Breeder has the following two core responsibilities-
1) Develop the breeding and R&D strategy for Pear Millet crop development leading to new products suitable to different agro-ecological conditions
2) Execute the crop strategy in validated breeding projects.
This position is supported by Assistant Breeders/ Breeders (Pearl Millet) and flexible research infrastructure to achieve the goals
The incumbent will be reporting to Vice President ( R&D).
Accountabilities:
1) Strategic:
a. Development of long-term breeding strategy
b. Development of product profiles in different segments and make project to achieve the goals.
c. Identification of trait priorities and development of trait projects.
d. Optimize, enrich and diversify germplasm pools .
2) Team management
a. Assign the different projects to team members and underline delivery time
b. Participate in crop strategy deployment plans.
c. Coordinate tasks within projects with enabling teams in the areas field and greenhouse trails and seed productions
d. Ensure accurate data collection and recording by those responsible for the task. Analyze and interpret data pertinent to the project scope and area of expertise.
e. Demonstrate fiscal responsibility and transparency in assigning the costs with respect to projects and programs
f. Maintain good communication within the internal and external customers
3) Product Delivery-
Secure delivery of a pipeline of products that conform to the requested product profile. Work with the Product Development team to push new hybrids through the different
Evaluation systems ultimately to the market place.
4) Intellectual property-
a. Identify intellectual property protection opportunities.
b. Provide technical support in the development of product registration or plant breeders rights applications
5) Networking with Biotech team -
a. Co ordinate with biotech team in trait introgressions/ marker assisted selection in hastening the product development
b. Apply innovation tools along with Biotech team and access open-source innovation systems while designing or executing projects and skill-development.

Essential knowledge and experience:
Expert knowledge in Pearl Millet Breeding, or a related discipline (preferable -PhD or 7- 15 years of experience)..
Good Knowledge of biotic and abiotic stress tolerance targets in Pearl Millet crop and understanding of the physiological or biochemical mechanisms underlying these stresses.
Knowledge of statistical and data analysis approaches in support of field trials and assessment of genetic parameters regarding, stability, combining ability, genetic variances, heritability, and genetic gain.
Advanced knowledge of crop genetic diversity and crop biology and culture.
Good Knowledge in Biotech integration in Pearl Millet breeding
A good, proven track record of success with commercial product development in Pearl Millet/Plant Breeding.
Technical and/or Staff Management skills ( 3- 5 years).
Proven ability to work with large and complex datasets.
Proven ability to develop and implement experimental methodologies.
Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and work with third-party collaborators to access germplasm, new traits, and/or protocols and breeding techniques
Demonstrated ability to lead people and motivate to venture in long-term scientific investigation prior to defining short-term, tangible applications in cultivar development.
